Doha is the capital and most populous city of the State of Qatar. It is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the central-east region of the country and contains many islands including The Pearl - an artificial island at North of the city and then Banana Island, Palm Tree Island, Shrao's Island, Al Safia Island, and Alia Island. Doha is the economic, commercial, educational and cultural center of the country. The city has witnessed rapid growth rates in population as a result of immigration and economic development. Currently it's population has surpassed 2,000,000 people. The majority of residents in Doha are Muslims, but the city is also home to many Catholics and Orthodox Christians. The official language of Qatar is Arabic, but English is commonly used as a second language.
Doha is placed within hot desert climate with very long summers from May to September and high temperatures which are on average of 38 °C. Winters are mild and cool, however the temperature rarely drops below 7 °C. Due to great expansion of the city and large number of architectural mega projects, Doha was declared as one of the Seven New Wonders Cities of the world and one of the 15 best new cities for business. Doha's economy constitutes primarily from natural gas and oil industries. A huge expansion had happen recently in infrastructure sector with numerous new highway projects, new Doha International Airport and Doha metro project. The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha is regarded as one of the best museums in the region along with Arab Museum of Modern Art. Cultural identity of the country is preserved through Katara Cultural Village development opened in 2010. Doha hosted 2015 World Men’s Handball Championship and it is getting ready for 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Doha is the educational center of the country and contains significant number of colleges like Qatar University, Weill Cornell Medical College, Virginia Commonwealth, Texas A&M University, Georgetown University and many others. These universities are the part of Education City, a 2,500 hectare Doha-based complex mainly for educational institutes.
